Identification
A rattle may be present, but rattles can be small, damaged, or silent. Keep distance rather than trying to inspect the head, eyes, or tail.
Typical habitat
Coastal and inland foothill habitats, brush, rocky areas, and developed edges where cover and prey are available.
Behavior
Usually avoids people when given room. A startled snake may defend itself and may not rattle first.
